Secondary cataract, or PCO, is a common complication after cataract surgery. The thin back of the capsule where the artificial lens sits becomes cloudy with time.
During surgery, some cells around the lens capsule remain. These cells can later grow and spread, and make the capsule thick and cloudy. This can cause your vision to become foggy once again.
Secondary cataract can cause blurry or foggy vision and decreased visual acuity. Many people experience it as looking through a dirty or milky lens. It’s harmless, but can affect your daily life.
To make a diagnosis, we use eye drops that dilate the pupil, and examine the eye using a slit-lamp microscope. This allows us to clearly see if the back of the lens capsule is cloudy.
Secondary cataract can be easily treated using YAG laser. The laser makes a small opening in the cloudy capsule, which quickly restores visual acuity. The treatment is quick, painless and usually doesn’t require any anesthesia.
