Cataract causes the lens of the eye to become cloudy, which gradually impairs eyesight. Common symptoms include blurry vision and sensitivity to light or glare. The disease mainly affects older people and can be caused by ageing, sun exposure and ocular damage, as well as some illnesses and medications.
When the lens becomes cloudy, it often leads to visual difficulties. Common symptoms of cataract include:
Cataract is generally diagnosed through magnification, where the lens is examined through a microscope and the retina is examined to rule out other causes of visual impairment.
Cataract is treated surgically. The cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. It’s not always necessary to have surgery immediately after being diagnosed, since the disease progresses slowly and it can take some time before the vision is impaired to the point that it requires surgery. When surgery is needed, we refer patients to a hospital or specialized clinic that performs this surgery.
